p.ink

concept ideation | typography & illustration

Personal Ink (P.ink) began as a grassroots movement in 2013, founded by Noel Franus, and became a program of Fuck Cancer in early 2019 which will allow both Fuck Cancer and Personal Ink to expand the support they offer their communities. P.ink is dedicated to empowering women to reclaim their bodies after mastectomies. Through education and connection with experienced tattoo artists who can help, we are committed to ensuring that breast cancer never has to leave the last mark.

For this illustration, I chose the rose as a symbol to represent new beginnings and hope, in contrast to the thorns that represent loss and defense. The roses used on this t-shirt are a subtle reminder to survivors and supporters of P.INK that despite going through a tough time, anything is possible if we have hope.

To improve the understanding of “P.INK” as shorthand for “Personal Ink” there have been a few small modifications for this t-shirt. Only the first letter of each word is capitalized—it now reads like P.Ink. The period has been moved higher and included as part of the font for aesthetic purposes.

color your dreams

concept ideation | illustration

The creative brief for this project asked that we interpret the concept “dreams in a bottle (box)”, imagining various fantasies inspired by wine and wine cues. My particular dreamscape was layered with multiple dimensions—swirling and overlapping with fruit notes, vines, and wine soaked waves. You see a woman in the foreground, fast asleep, her hair begins to spin into vines and mingle with the surrounding surreal imagery. Because it’s a dream, not everything makes sense—skyscrapers warp upside down, shapes float and expand, the black holes perhaps lead to other Black Box dimensions.

Generation Why

concept ideation | illustration

Perhaps it’s my Halloween birthday or Scorpio horoscope to blame, but I have particular fascination with true crime, forensics, and criminology. The stack of books I’ve collected often relate to one of these areas, and now my podcasts do too. One such podcast, Generation Why, has kept me company on many a long commute. Justin and Aaron pioneered their true crime podcast in 2012, building a loyal following ever since. Setting them apart from other podcasts — they’re especially good at breaking down theories and sharing their opinions on unsolved murders, controversies, mysteries and conspiracies.

I’ve had the pleasure of working on three separate projects for Generation Why and their fans. The best part has been seeing fellow listeners showing off their new purchase, sharing the items I’ve designed over social. I was lucky enough to join them at Crime Con in New Orleans as well. I highly recommend giving their podcast a listen (checkout their merch while you’re at it!):

All True Crime

Illustration is a form of visual storytelling — instead of a novel, there’s just one page with many narratives wrapped into one. When Generation Why approached me with the concept behind the “All True Crime” illustration, I chose to communicate a particular mood & feel, sense of place, and graphic style for their Patreon audience. Each element adds to the story being told — the flashlight illuminating “True Crime” amidst the starscape, a nod to the original radio signal with bolts in the sky and waves beneath, all framed by a dark forest and Kansas City skyline accenting the collar. Generation Why is unlike others in their genre...No Politics. No Sports. Just True Crime.

Generation Why Full Moon

With its middle ground between the light of the sun and the darkness of night — the moon’s vast history is full of mystery and superstition. Similar to a full moon softly illuminating its surroundings — the Generation Why Podcast sheds light on true crime’s unsolved murders & controversies.

“Research and data show us that true crime is a hot topic for female listeners specifically, with listening of the genre increasing by 16% among women in 2019 compared to 2018.” (For the Record, 2020)

Understanding their audience and potential new listeners, this illustration was created with a feminine aesthetic in mind. The circular shape and moon symbolism are subtle reminders of feminine energy.
